Gladwell describes the complexity of interactions between strangers especially for policing. He highlights the impossible tasks we have assigned police with everything from confronting armed, dangerous criminals to dealing with domestic issues and the homeless. His argument is that ‘defunding’ police work is the exact opposite of what needs to occur- additional funding and more extensive training is required along with a downsizing of what police are required to do. He goes into great detail defining why our ‘default mode of trust’ is critical to the healthy survival of a civilized nation.Gladwell describes the complexity of interactions between strangers especially for policing. A great read providing ample data which rational people would recognize as pointing to reality but it is ignored with emotion controlling decisions and outcome particularly in politics. Even in our court system, lawyers are trained to fight to win rather than finding the truth thus manipulating the emotions of juries to accomplish their goal.
