Elizabeth and Wynn take on the Northern Frontier as a newlywed couple, facing new challenges and opportunities along the way. While a heartwarming read, the second book doesn't have the same 'wow' factor as the first one - most likely due to the fact that Elizabeth and Wynn are now married and not courting or flirting with each other.
(sigh)
Janette Oke is a wonderful writer. She knows how to make the reader feel as though they are standing next to the characters. Her stories are realistic; her characters as frustrating as they are endearing; and her descriptions enchanting. These novels are not fast-paced. They are not dramas or sweeping romances in the modern way. But they are sweeping, and they are dramatic in a way that is realistic. I love watching Elizabeth and Wynn grow through their challenges. They are such a sweet couple, and I adore the honest and healthy relationship between them. Their example of marriage is inspiring; Wynn deeply cares for and values Elizabeth, while Elizabeth has admiration and love for Wynn. Although they get frustrated with one another, like any couple, they realize that sometimes compromises must be had- and that prayer helps you through the tough spots.
I greatly enjoyed reading When Comes the Spring, the 2nd book in Elizabeth and Wynn's journey, and watching them as they try to adapt to living in a rough and unforgiving Northern Canadian village. Through a grueling winter, Elizabeth's fortitude and faith will be tested.
Not as good as the first book, but still enjoyable.
