I read this book out loud to a group of 2nd graders as a part of our Caldecott winners week. I think they were semi-into this story, but only because I really hammed up the read-aloud. Dramatic pauses, speeding up/slowing down, you name it, I tried it. Like other Caldecott winners I have used as read-alouds, I think this one would do better as a one-on-one or a small group read-aloud, not for a large class.

The idea of vaudeville is foreign even to me as an adult, so I imagine it must feel even farther removed to young students. Perhaps this book would do better if accompanied by videos that explain/describe vaudeville before they read and include a discussion of "olden times" and how life is different from our parents and grandparents.
