In what is likely Farley Mowat's last published book, indeed printed posthumously (he died in 2014), the author returns to a familiar theme in many of his books, WWII. This time, he reveals his wartime correspondence between himself, his parents (both ways) and with some of his confidantes from across Canada. The battle to liberate Italy was uncommonly bloody and this is reflected in the letters, where we learn among other things Mowat was promoted and demoted depending on the fickleness of whatever commanding officer was in charge. He also offers some detail in the differences on how Canadian and American battalions were organized even as they were fighting side by side. An important read from a person who would go on to become of the 20th century's most beloved, and controversial, authors and environmentalists.

A frank, frightening, and frequently humorous account of the involvement of the "Hasty Ps" in the Italian Campaign of World War 2 told by a renowned Canadian non-fiction author by means of the edited letters with his father (a World War 1 veteran).

"... The most fascinating thing I saw [in Pompeii] was a one-room house on the outskirts, possibly twenty centuries old, that had braved the earthquakes, the lesser eruptions [of Mt. Vesuvius], been buried under a final inferno of lava, remained entombed into our times, and then been brought back into the sun a few decades ago by archeologists ... only to be blown to smithereens by an unaimed bomb that probably was made in a factory ten thousand miles away in Canada or the U.S. The bomb succeeded where the vast rage of nature and the erosion of time had failed. Is there a moral here?" [p. 83]
