When a young man in the Uplands blinds himself rather than use his gift of "unmaking"--a violent talent shared by members of his family--he upsets the precarious balance of power among rival feuding families, each of which has a strange and deadly talent of its own.

Very exciting and creative. I don't think I've seen a story like this. Highly recommend.

The book moves a bit slowly, and there seems so much more potential with the world the characters inhabit and of the 'gifts' that never really comes into fruition. There are a lot of questions left unanswered at the end of the book, but I had allowed for it since there were two more books afterwards; however, I'm nearly finished the third and last book and they are still left unanswered. In fact, the three books are basically three separate books that just happen to take place in the same world with a few cameos from previous books, and deals more with the politics of the places than the gifts.

I found this book confusing at first, and not like what I expected it to be. If you have high hopes for this book, they will most likely not be met. Interesting theme though.

Wow, I loved this book so much! Ursula Le Guin is a fantastic author; the worlds she creates are rich in detail, and her writing flows so smoothly. I also loved her Earthsea books, although I have yet to finish the series. Anyone who wants a fascinating and engaging read, READ THIS! It's beautiful.

LeGuin is a wonderful author and usually draws you into the story with effortless ease. I found this book a little tedious in the first half since there was a long cast of characters and terms to get familiar with.

The second half of the book was more interesting. This story was not bad but pales in comparison to her other works (Earthsea books for example).

Stories are what death thinks he puts an end to. He can't understand that they end in him, but they don't end with him.

To see that your life is a story while you're in the middle of living it may be a help to living it well. It's unwise, though, to think you know how it's going to go, or how it's going to end. That's to be known only when it's over.
