What with all the mumbling and contrived southern accents and no subtitles so I could keep up with all the nuances of the story, I got a stress headache 1/3 of the way through and stopped watching it.

Although it is said that this film does not follow the 1949 original film's narrative and is more faithful to the novel than the earlier movie, I don't see a big difference.
To me, the 2006 film seems to be a remake of the 1949 version.
It is also said that the director (Steven Zaillian) never saw the original film, and that he adapted the screenplay solely from Warren's novel.
He should've seen it.
That way, he could've made a difference.

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box.

As an avid fan of Sean Penn, I think he may have been "off the wagon" during this period of his film career. "Fast times at Ridgemont High" was a much better performance

I found the film dull, plodding, and although I watched it through to the end in hopes it would deliver some payoff, it never did. Especially considering the high-powered cast, I was hoping for something much more intelligent and subtle. The trite metaphorical finale is an insult to anyone with half a brain.
