Unexpectedly decent story. Yes there are a bunch of plot holes but if you ignore them then it is a decent film. The ending is also well thought out. Believable plot.

Kind of a trashy shark survival bite fest, but Blake Lively is sure cute and looks great in her tiny, tight swim suit!
Jaws for Millennials’! I like that.

Often called 'Jaws for Millenials', The Shallows succeeds by being more realistic with its shark behavior and having Blake Lively as a clever surfer tackling her own life problems. I found it a little hard to root for her though, considering the many surfing sins she breaks, such as going to a beach alone, surfing alone, not telling people where she is, etc.

The incredible visuals, animations, and graphics, the stunning performance by the lead actress, and the touching backstory to this film’s storyline amazingly wrapped together “The Shallows”. Although some audience members found the plot a bit cliché, which I can agree to on certain terms, what stood out to me was the significance of what I thought were little details at the beginning. For instance, the fact that the tour guide didn’t tell Nancy, the main character, the name of the island she was visiting. Putting the unrealistic optimism and confidence of Nancy aside, I truly enjoyed the way the producers chose to build up suspense, for instance, when a drunk man walked onto the island. Nancy managed to get his attention and direct him to her bag so he can use her phone to call for help, only for the man to rummage through Nancy’s bag and steal her money instead. Overall, I absolutely loved watching “The Shallows” and I would recommend it to any audience member looking for a simple yet thrilling and action-packed movie. Rating 3.5/5

Two important things, here:

1. This is NOT a jaws re-run or sequel.

2. Blake Lively.

Blake's had a terrific career, thus far, and this survival thriller's a departure of sorts, from her supporting roles in crime dramas (The Town, Savages) to her first break-out starring role, in the 2015, box-office winner, The Age of Adeline. Her performance--and the clever premise--made that movie a hit.

So...why this one, when the title might also speak for the plot?
Ans: Another starring role. Even better: the only competition for our attention is a shark. She OWNS this one, dominating the movie the same way that Tom Hanks dominated "Cast Away" and Robert Redford dominated "All Is Lost": they are isolated by circumstances and must, somehow, survive. Another bravura performance, here.

Now, the plot: Illogical? Sure. But given the beautiful setting, stunning visual effects and Lively's performance under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra, who's been responsible for the recent series of Liam Neeson thrillers--suspending disbelief is easy. Will the injured surfer threatened by a massive killer shark survive her ordeal?
How CAN she?
Grab the popcorn.

We actually love shark movies and I thought this one was very well done... a few parts actually made ya look away from the tv... graphics were very good and a good story too! We loved it and would watch again :)

It was a suspenseful, action packed movie, although quite predictable. The demise of the shark was kind of dumb.

A tense shark attack film. Analysis will find flaws but there's nothing so obvious it can't be overlooked by a little willing suspension of disbelief. You might also enjoy Soul Surfer and 127 Hours (no sharks in this but same feel), both based on real events.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Intense scenes of attacking shark.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Despite its PG-13 rating this film is intense. There is a prodigious amount of blood and a very graphic suture scene.

Nancy: She's not coming.

Carlos: Who?

Nancy: Uh. My friend, you know. You know, the girl we left back at the hotel? You know, she smelled like Don Julio and bad choices.

The setting:
Guess where I am? Tijuana.
-Oh, my God. No way. Mom's beach, right?
It's just as beautiful as she said it was.
===
Anything gnarly out here, I should know about?
-There's some rocks over there! There's only one tide a day, and when the tide gets low, it becomes an island. There's some nasty fire coral. It stings like a jellyfish.

It's April 26, 2016. Uh, if you find this, please send help right away. I've been attacked by a shark. He's killed three other people since I got here. He's still circling, so... Uh, he's got this big old whale over here, but that-that's the problem. I swam right up onto his feeding ground.
