Marjorie M. Liu has won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story and I can certainly see why. The world she has built, and Sana Takeda has illustrated, is so rich and the characters are so compelling. It's a very dark story and quite violent, yet not gratuitously so. The illustrations are breath-taking in their detail and even the paneling is done in some creative ways. I was hooked from the beginning and I can't wait for the main character to find out more about her past!

I'm very picky when it comes to graphic novels. So when I say that Monstress absolutely blew me away, know that I don't say that lightly. Not only is this story GORGEOUSLY illustrated, but the characters are fascinating and the central mystery fills me with the best kind of dread. Plus, I don't think I've ever seen any fantasy story - graphic or otherwise - that has as many multifaceted female characters as Monstress. One word of warning, though: there's some pretty graphic violence depicted here, so be prepared to see blood if you pick this one up.

Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful graphic novels I've ever read. The art is stunning. And the setting: an alternate matriarchal 1900's Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steam punk, is truly unique.
I loved this book.

Beautiful art work. It was a little too much fantasy for me but for anyone who loves a dark fantasy this will be your favorite graphic novel without a doubt!

A gorgeously illustrated first volume in a new series. It begins in the aftermath of a huge event, so you always having this creeping sensation that you're missing information. But once you get more into the book details present themselves and you can't wait for a new piece to the puzzle. To me, it makes for good world-building. Also available on Hoopla.

Beautiful artwork and good storytelling

Very cool blend of an alternate historical Asia, matriarchal societies, war, fantasy, diverse characters, beautiful art, and a really rich and complicated story. I'll admit I was lost at times, which did hinder my enjoyment of the storyline, but this was definitely a solid read, especially for a first volume.

Beautifully drawn, but storyline was very slow. This made the book hard to get through . Storyline also jumped around between flashbacks and present moments that didn't always connect. Left me with brief moments of confusion. Sadly disappointed since it was drawn so well.

This is awesome. It's totally intense world building along with mind blowing artwork. This world is steampunky but also fantasy, and terrifying fantasy at that. We have the fallout from a war, a quest, a girl on the hunt, and the same girl who is also a monster. Possibly. It's really just an all around intensely awesome book and I can't wait for the rest

A gorgeous and complex graphic novel. There are great and complex characters in a novel fantasy setting. I found myself immersed in the story and surprised when the volume ended! Note: the content is quite graphic and it does contain violence.
