Just in time for the winter holidays, “The Heart of Henry Quantum” tells a humorous and witty story of one man’s sole mission to find the perfect Christmas gift for his wife. Under the pen name of Pepper Harding, an author renowned for his works in entirely different genres crafts a whimsical and festive tale of an eccentric fellow named Henry Quantum.
Meet Henry Quantum: a bemused and peculiar forty-something advertising executive. The date is December 23rd, the city is bustling New York, and the seemingly impossible task is purchasing Chanel No. 5 Perfume for his wife. Although Henry has scheduled the tasks of the day to the millisecond, his journey to the department store is easily and often interrupted by many distractions along the way.
Among the many disruptions, the most notable is an uncomfortable encounter with his former lover that results in a heated and painstakingly honest reunion. All the while, his wife is plotting misadventures and discovering startling revelations of her own. Through alternating narratives, Harding provides readers with the opportunity to follow a day in the life of three central characters: Henry, his wife Margaret, and his ex-girlfriend Daisy.
Through his quirky writing style, Harding takes a sliver from the famed movie ‘Love Actually’ and divulges into a hilarious and captivating tale both filled with innocent gift giving and egregious adultery. Those that enjoy the awkward yet loveable character of Don Tillman in The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect will enjoy the equally idiosyncratic character of Henry Quantum. This upbeat and witty novel will bring reprieve from the gloomy weather and lift your spirits for the coming of another hectic holiday season.
Give yourself a much needed break during the busy holiday season and pick up this enjoyable read, and many others, at the Stratford Public Library.
