I always had felt that Perry was under-utilised on FRIENDS. But this role does him no favors. He was forced by the director to restrain his comedic impulses, and the result is a constant state of sombreness that begs for some ECT to blast him out of. Steenburgen's very sexy performance saved the film for me.// Apparently the inspiration for the film was an autobiographical one. I find it difficult to believe in how willing the various therapists were, to help the character as played by Perry ( he of the continual frown). Also, are we expected to believe that a single experience with toking too many hits of potent marijuana, created the state of depersonalization depicted in this film? As for the performance itself, it seems one directorial instruction was crucially given: Don't Smile. Go listen to some Pink Floyd, dude. Get Steenburgen off from on top of you: she's just using you. You're her tool.

Good - Matthew Perry is the main actor in this film about a guy who finds himself depressed searching for a remedy for his condition. Perry is one of those actors that whatever he does, he'll bring life to the work. And so, he accomplishes this again. I think Perry must've tapped into his "Chandler" persona from Friends to create a character that is depressed on screen but full of life at the same time. You could see Chandlerism throughout. As an actor, Perry is a master at facial expressions. He could just stand there, raised shoulders, hands in pocket and tell you exactly what he's feeling based solely on his factial expressions. Mary Steenbergen plays a psychiatrist in this film that has to deal with issues of her own. The beautiful Lynn Collings, who plays Sarah, Perry's love interest, also brings life to this film. The film has good intentions and good messages scattered throughout. It's also pegged as a comedy but it's more of a drama with some light scenes. I liked it but it may not be for everyone's taste - it has that independent film feel to it (if you know what I mean).

Note to parents - there is one scene that takes place in a strip bar with full nudity. You may want to be weary of this if you're planning on seeing this with younger folk. There are expletives throughout this film as well.
