So. I recall the first time this played on TV many many years ago. Mare Winningham is wonderful in the role of a child speaking for her parents that are both deaf. Watching the extras afterward I discovered that many involved in this production (behind and in front of the camera) are deaf. This is a language and culture we so rarely encounter yet it is rich and worth knowing. There are some bleak spots but it's all part of the story/character development. We thoroughly enjoyed this and it holds up even after all these years. Date movie? Definately fodder for discussion, especially with children.
