Based on the Pueblo legends that their ancestors fled a world turned evil, emerging into this dimension from a hole in the ground, this modern-day fantastical adventure was a major departure for L'Amour. Unfortunately it matches an interesting premise with a nearly unreadable execution. The supposed hero spends the majority of the novel wrestling with indecision and rahashing what little plot has been doled out. Add weak world-building and a conclusion involving several characters introduced much too late, and I am forced to dub this one of the worst books I've ever read.
